LIMA, OH (WLIO) – Many important decisions are to be made on the November election ballot, including State Issue 1 regarding gerrymandering.

The We Are Ohio group and Union Strong held a community meeting on Thursday to talk about State Issue 1 and its importance regarding fair voting districts. Several speakers voiced their opinions, including the president of the Ohio State Association of Letter Carriers, Jeff Kranz, who spoke about the importance of absentee and mail-in ballots.

If passed, Issue One would give power to Ohio citizens to draw fair and impartial maps for voting districts in an open and transparent process and would ban politicians and lobbyists from controlling the district-making process.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re a Democrat, a Republican, an Independent, a Libertarian. When those districts are manipulated, it means that those that made the map selected us as the voters, and it marginalizes our power overall so that we cannot hold these folks accountable,” commented Catherine Turcer, executive director of Common Cause Ohio.
